The Rink Opens First and Closes Last: Mitch Park's Winter, as Seen From Saratoga Farms

Most people think of Edmond's holiday season at Mitch Park as Luminance. On the 2026–27 calendar, though, the light stroll is the shorter of the two big attractions. The Edmond Ice Rink plans public skating from November 7, 2026, through January 31, 2027. That's about 86 days. Edmond Electric's Luminance runs November 20 through January 1, which is about 43. The rink opens 13 days before the lights come on and stays open 30 days after they come down.

For Saratoga Farms, this is close to home. A 2005 Edmond Planning Commission record describes the Hunter's Creek V tract on the west side of Kelly, half a mile south of Coffee Creek Road, as bordered by Mitch Park on the south and the Saratoga Farms property on the west. The park covers 280 acres at Kelly Avenue and Covell Road and has more than five miles of multi-use trails. So this winter's schedule is a schedule for the park next door, and it starts with the rink.

The order things switch on

The season doesn't start on one night. It builds over about three weeks in November:

  1. Sunday, November 1, 1 to 4 p.m. The Prevail Charity Trail Run takes over the Mitch Park Trail. It's a charity run co-hosted with a local nonprofit. The same day at noon, online sales open for Edmond Ice Rink season passes and gift certificates.
  2. Saturday, November 7. Public skating opens.
  3. Sunday, November 15, noon to 4 p.m. The rink's first Shop Small Pop-Up.
  4. Friday, November 20. Luminance lights up, 5 to 10 p.m. daily.
  5. November 22 through 28. Thanksgiving break hours begin at the rink.
  6. Sunday, December 20, noon to 4 p.m. The second Shop Small Pop-Up falls on the first day of the rink's winter break hours.
  7. Friday, January 1. Luminance's last night.
  8. Sunday, January 31. The rink's last day of public skating.

The rink is open on every one of those dates after November 7. The other events come and go inside its window.

The rink carries the season

Ice Challenge Enterprises, LLC runs the rink. A proposed agreement with the City of Edmond and the Edmond Public Works Authority sets a contract term of October 1, 2026, through February 28, 2027. That agreement went before the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on September 17 and appeared in a City Council packet dated September 28. The extra months on either side of the skating dates are the time the operator gets to set up and take down. The agreement also allows four more five-month terms, each running from October through February.

The operator calls 2026–27 the 16th season of skating in Mitch Park. The Oklahoman's coverage dates the Mitch Park location to November 2014, when it reported that the rink would open at a new site in the park. The rink sits next to the silo.

Here's what the rink lists for this season:

  • $15 general admission with skate rental
  • $13 general admission with military ID
  • $10 without skate rental
  • $10 for children 5 and under

Season passes include skate rental, are good for the whole season and cover one skater each. Gift certificates cover one session with rentals and don't carry over to the next season. General admission tickets are sold at the rink.

Where the rink and the lights overlap

Since the two attractions are only a short walk apart in the same park, the useful question is when both are open. Luminance is open the same hours every day. The rink's hours change with the day of the week and the school calendar.

Day or period Ice rink hours Luminance hours Both open
Monday–Thursday 3–9 p.m. 5–10 p.m. 5–9 p.m.
Friday 3–10 p.m. 5–10 p.m. 5–10 p.m.
Saturday Noon–10 p.m. 5–10 p.m. 5–10 p.m.
Sunday Noon–9 p.m. 5–10 p.m. 5–9 p.m.
Thanksgiving break, Nov. 22–28 Noon–10 p.m. daily 5–10 p.m. 5–10 p.m.
Winter break, Dec. 20–Jan. 1, except Christmas Eve Noon–10 p.m. daily 5–10 p.m. 5–10 p.m.
Christmas Eve Noon–5 p.m. 5–10 p.m. None

Friday and Saturday nights give the full five-hour overlap. So does every day of both school breaks except Christmas Eve. Monday through Thursday, the rink closes an hour before the lights do. On Christmas Eve, the rink closes at 5 p.m., the hour Luminance turns on. The rink's Christmas Day and New Year's Eve hours are noon to 10 p.m.

Food and drink also tie the two together. Luminance is free and has no concessions. Its FAQ invites visitors to bring their own hot chocolate or coffee and notes that the Edmond Outdoor Ice Rink has a small concession. The same FAQ says Mitch Park is dog-friendly as long as dogs stay leashed and owners pick up after them. Some FAQ details on that page still carry 2025–26 dates, so the November 20 to January 1 run on the page's main banner is the one to plan around. Visit Edmond says Luminance's Merry Marketplace will have pop-up shops, food trucks, face painting, crafts and Santa photos, with 2026 dates still to be announced.

The parts of the park that keep running

The rink and lights take up only part of the park. The trail that hosts the Prevail run on November 1 stays open all season. The Tye F. Cunningham Disc Golf Course, an 18-hole layout west of the YMCA, the MAC, the Senior Center and the amphitheater, has also gotten upgrades. Minutes from the February 19, 2026, Parks Board meeting describe new tee pads, general course improvements and secondary baskets that make the existing course 36 baskets.

Indoors is less settled. The Mitch Park YMCA and Edmond Aquatic Center at 2901 Marilyn Williams Drive has a 50-meter competition pool. According to the Parks Board's August 20, 2026, minutes, facility hours were still restricted because of the temperature. The YMCA had decided that replacing some of the geothermal capacity with rooftop units was probably not a good fix, and the city was pushing for a permanent solution. The city, the school district and the YMCA will share the cost. Swimmers planning winter laps should check current hours.

The plan on hold, and why that matters this winter

The longer-term future of Mitch Park is still open. In February, city parks staff presented a draft Mitch Park Master Plan to the advisory board and said clearly that it was a draft. Ideas in it included rerouting the 5K trail so it no longer crosses the park's main entry, adding pickleball, a splash pad, one turf rectangular field, more parking behind the YMCA, two lookout towers, two more pavilions and educational stations along the trails. The existing trail would stay. Proposed dog parks near the skate park got pushback from several board members, who didn't like how close they were to the trails. The draft also showed space behind the MAC for outdoor markets held in Mitch Park, using pop-up tents rather than permanent structures.

By the August 20 meeting, staff reported that the master plan had been pulled from the City Council agenda. The minutes don't give a reason or a new date. Every one of those ideas is still a proposal. The park this winter is the same one Saratoga Farms already knows: the trails, the disc golf course, the silo, and now the rink and the lights.
